Tivo… I love you!

Have I mentioned how much I love Tivo?

Seriously this device is the best thing EVER.

I just got the latest update and WOW I’m loving it even more.

Now I can pull recorded programs from my Tivos onto my computer!

The theory here is that you could put them on a laptop and take them with you when traveling. I’ve not used it for that obviously, as I’m moving them onto my desktop, but the service is still paying off.

See I don’t have a cable or Satellite TV connection in my office at home. And I wasn’t real jazzed about installing one. But this service lets me plug in the old monitor and play my Tivo’d shows on it as I use my main monitor as normal.

So now I can watch 24, and all my other favorite shows, while smoking a cigar (my office is the only indoor room where this is permitted), and working on my website.

BRILLIANT!

The down side…

I’ll be spending an even greater percentage of my life in that room now.

The upside…

I’ll be spending an even greater percentage of my life in that room now.

Hey what can I say…

I like cigars, computers, and TV.

Now that room is the only place I can enjoy all three. Very Happy

I highly suggest that those of you with a Tivo Series 2 machine, a local lan or wi-fi connection, and the “networked Tivo” service check this new “Tivo To go” feature out.

Here's what people are saying about this post:

Your video card supports dual monitors I assume.

Mine does as well, but one of them has to be digital interface and one has to be analog (I think).

I came up with a slighly different solution. I have two computers in my room (well ok 3, but one is a 10 year old Tandy … which I LOVE … no Tandy knocking here). Anyhow … I found this cool USB2 gadget that has a cable TC jack on one side and a USB plug on the other. So on one PC I can be watching TV, while on the other I can be doing anything else.

I already had cable run in that room so it was no big deal. I could have a TV in the room (and in fact did), but its much easier to have it on the send monitor right next to the main monitor than on a TV practically behind me (I lost more computer games that way!)

But… I still need to get Tivo.

Yeah it supports two monitors.

My new LCD uses the DVI and when needed, the old monitor hooks up with “old fashioned” connection. Cool

Those bastards over a DirecTV (I have a DirecTiVo, not a regular TiVo) are not allowing our machines to have TiVo to go. What a bunch of a-holes. That, and they’re raising rates to boot.

TiVo to go sounds awesome.

Since we just moved…I finally broke down and got digital cable. The selling point was free DVR. I doubt it will be nearly as cool as Tivo (which I really, really want), but it will be a good start! I can’t wait!

I’ve been thinking about Tivo, but I don’t want to worry about having to change channels on my cable box. Does the Tivo replace the cable box? Do you tell it what channel you want to record?

Well I have Satellite at home but I imagine it works pretty much the same as cable.

I still need my satellite set top box to receive the signal… so maybe you’ll need the cable box… but I doubt it. Tivo has a tuner and get’s its program info from the Tivo service. Since I’ve had the Tivo I’ve not had to change the channel on anything but the Tivo unit itself.

The only other caveat is that I have a stand alone Tivo box.

There may (or may not) be some differences in the Tivo boxes that come from you content provider as a part of your monthly service.

Take the plunge my friend.

You’ll wonder how you went so long without it. Smile
